English Sparkling Wine Fox & Fox win National Champion and a Gold Medal
19th June 2018
The 60th Vino Ljubljana awards took place in Slovenia and are regarded as the worlds oldest dedicated wine awards with a proud history. 43 judges to include myself as a representative from the UK (22 countries all took part in judging) descended upon the capital of Slovenia to taste through 425 samples in the hunt for gold medal winners and National Champions.
Wine judging is always a fun and educational experience for me as ways in which they are set up can vary in many ways from the points score system to the economical position of the awards (some younger awards will have smaller budgets and tighter spending capabilities whereas longer established awards may have £1,000’s of sponsorship money to invest in their judges and their entertainment and comfort). The Vino Ljubljana awards were being rejuvenated and good investment had been made into both the set up of the judging days and processes along with the care and entertainment for the judges which included some very engaging tours of local wineries.
So, as I was going to a new country for me and new awards and having heard they had no English sparkling wine entries I took it upon myself to bring some samples to enter of which I brought the Fox and Fox Mosaic 2014. Though I was not on the side of judging the wine from Fox and Fox myself, it was undoubtedly a hit and a good signal to many who had never tasted before, that English sparkling wine is certainly a fizz that compares well to any other countries traditionally made bubbly. I was pleased to be told that both a National Champion award and a Gold Medal had been won by Fox and Fox that of course adds to their growing list of wins from awards to include Gold medals and a Trophy at our very own World’s Finest Glass of Bubbly awards 2017.
Congratulations team Fox and Fox!
