Mother Day Sparkling Wine

Mother’s Day is nearing, so it’s time to start planning the perfect day and how better to celebrate your mother than with a bottle of fine Champagne or Sparkling Wine.

I’ve chosen 5 different Sparkling Wines, including Champagne, Prosecco and Sparkling Wine made in England.

I’ll share my tasting notes on each Sparkling Wine and give you some interesting information on the wineries because some wineries have very interesting origin stories and facts to share.

Let’s start exploring and hopefully find the perfect Sparkling Wine for Mother’s Day.

Villa Sandi – Opere Serenissima DOC

This Italian DOC Sparkling Wine from Villa Sandi is made using the traditional method, it has been a highly liked Sparkling Wine at the Glass of Bubbly Awards, it was The World’s Finest Glass of Bubbly in 2018 and it took home a Gold Medal in the Classic & Elegant Category in 2019.

Villa Sandi started making Sparkling Wines using the Classic Method in 2011.

An interesting fact about the name is, it is a tribute to the Serenissima Republic of Venice, which ruled the Venetian territories and most of north-eastern Italy until the end of the eighteenth century.

Fitz Sparkling Wine – Fitz Classic

Fitz Sparkling Wine – Fitz Classic

Fitz Sparkling Wine – Fitz Classic

When Fitz decided they wanted to make English Sparkling Wine they looked around to see how others made them, what they noticed was that a lot of the other English producers used Champagne grapes and used the Champagne method, Fitz wanted to do things differently to stand out, they saw ‘there seemed to be room for some diversity’.

They experimented with different grape varieties and also produced their wines by using the Charmat method or secondary fermentation rather than the classic Champagne method.

Now even though Fitz is made in England, creating their Sparkling Wines using only English grapes and people, they couldn’t call their Sparkling Wine, English Sparkling Wine, this is because to be able to have English Sparkling Wine on your label you have to make it using the Champagne method, which Fitz didn’t want to do, so that’s why you see on their label they say, ‘Fitz Sparkling Wine Made In England’.

There’s always a story behind the name of a winery and Fitz has a very good one: ‘FitzRoy is an Anglo‐Norman name originally meaning “son of the king” (from the French Fils de Roi). In many cases, it was given to an illegitimate son or daughter of the king to mark their royal parent.’ As Fitz is a Sparkling Wine Made In England, but can’t call themselves English Sparkling Wine, they felt it fit perfectly.

Fitz Classic Tasting Notes

Aroma – “Nutty and yeasty with green grape and white pear purée.”

Taste – “Soft citrus, hazelnut and white floral.”

This Sparkling Wine Made In England won a Silver Medal in the Spring Fling Category at The World’s Finest Glass of Bubbly Awards 2019.

Champagne Frerejean Frères – Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut NV

Champagne Frerejean Frères – Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut NV

Champgne Frerejean Frères started out making Champagne for their friends and family, but word soon spread and they went into business in 2005.

To produce the Gold Medal Champagne that we have here, it took time for Frerejean Frères, between 6 to 8 years to be precise, that’s how long it takes to make a bottle of Frerejean Frères Premier Cru Brut NV, and when they make their vintage cuvée, it takes no less than 8 years.

They have in their cellars at any one time, tens of thousands of bottles, each being riddled by hand several times a day.

I’ve always loved the two little canons that sit on the Frerejean Frères label and now I think I know why. – The founders of Frerejean Frères supplied the French army defending the region against the Prussians, during the Napoleonic Wars.

Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut NV Tasting Notes

Aroma – “Apricot and toast with butter along with a hint of yellow rose blossom.”

Taste – “Sweet citrus, honeycomb, yellow stone fruits and croissant.”

This Champagne won a Gold Medal in the Classic & Elegant Category at The World’s Finest Glass of Bubbly Awards 2019.

Fiol Prosecco DOC

Fiol Prosecco DOC

Fiol Prosecco DOC

Fiol was created by a group of friends who grew up drinking Prosecco, after enjoying a wide range of Prosecco they never found what they believed embodied what a Prosecco truly was meant to be, so that’s why they created Fiol, to fill the gap in Prosecco and to share it with the rest of the world.

To them, their Prosecco embodies Italian culture, friendship and going out and enjoying life.

Fiol Prosecco DOC Tasting Notes

Aroma – “Yellow and green apple and pear.”

Cavas Naveran covers 100 hectares in the Alt Penedès in Northern Spain about a 1 hour drive away from Barcelona.

To know a little about how this Spanish Sparkling Wine was made, the grapes were picked in early August and it was aged for at least 2 years before being ready to enjoy.

Cavas Naveran produces 500,000 bottles of wine annually, this production is split between 50% Cava and 50% other Spanish Wines.

If you prefer to enjoy your glass of Sparkling Wine with a meal then Cavas Naveran also has a recipe page on their website, giving you a couple of splendid dishes to enjoy with a bottle of their Sparkling Wine, you can check them out here.
