Trump Winery Wins 2014 Monticello Cup
11th April 2014
Charlottesville, VA – April 11, 2014: Trump Winery adds the Monticello Cup to its list of recent successes which include gold medals at the San Francisco International Wine Competition and Jefferson Cup Invitational, two best-in-class wins at Vineyard and Winery Management East meets West Competition and the Jefferson Cup Invitational, and being named to Gayot’s Top Ten American Sparkling wine list to name a few.
Virginia’s Secretary of Agriculture, Todd Haymore, awarded the 2014 Monticello Cup to Trump Winery’s 2009 Sparkling Rosé at an awards ceremony held at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville,VA.
Trump Winery’s 2012 Meritage also won a gold medal—winning two of the five gold medals wines awarded at this year’s competition. Both winemakers were honored to be recognized at a wine competition that is a showcase event in the Monticello AVA region.
Jonathan Wheeler, who has dedicated his winemaking to sparkling wines stated, “There are some great wines coming out of the Monticello AVA. I couldn’t be happier that my Sparking Rosé stood out in the competition and not only won a gold medal but was awarded the Monticello Cup.”
Katell Griaud can’t get over the overwhelming success of the 2012 Meritage since its first release in December 2013. “I can’t keep the wine on the shelves!” She believes winning gold in this competition is especially significant as “the Monticello AVA continues to gain accolades among the best wine regions in the world. All eyes are on Virginia wines and more importantly, the Monticello region. To be awarded by Secretary Haymore is a great honor,” she explained.
Both Griaud and Wheeler owe a lot of their success to President of Trump Winery, Eric Trump, who not only is focused on quality and but also expanding the audience. “Competing among the best wineries in the Monticello AVA and taking home the Cup proves we are doing what we set out to do. When we purchased the winery we set out to produce wines that could compete with the best wines in the world and we’ve had great successes in just two years. This award is another huge honor and we are all very proud.”
The Jefferson Wine and Grape Growers Society, sponsor of the Monticello Cup wine competition, exists to promote and encourage cooperation among the Central Virginia wineries.
