When it comes to alcohol, we’re sure you’ve heard many warnings about it. But, in moderation, having a ‘drink’ is an enjoyable activity that can also have some surprising benefits. And, as you get that bit older, experience means you naturally tend to be a little more sensible and are happy enjoying an occasional drink or two, without going overboard.

The Benefits of Some Bubbles in the Over 60s

The results of research on alcohol by a group of universities in 2014, suggests a good reason why the over 60s should be encouraged to enjoy an alcoholic drink from time-to-time. The universities of Texas, Kentucky and Maryland, have found that small amounts of alcohol, drunk regularly by people over 60, can enhance their memory.

That’s right, drinking alcohol regularly – but not too much on each occasion – can aid memory recall and make it easier than for those who don’t enjoy a regular tipple.

Of course, there’s no suggestion that becoming a hardened drinker will help you re-live your favourite memories. But, it seems that there’s nothing at all wrong with having a little drink now and then, as an enjoyable pastime to engage in, that can be a fun social event too. And, if it helps with memory recall, then you should have plenty of old stories to share with your like-minded friends!

Of course, it doesn’t have to be Champagne. But, if you’re only having the one glass – why not make it a glass of your favourite tipple?

Enjoy Alcohol in Moderation

Enjoying a nice glass of Champagne or a small glass of something a little stronger, now-and-again isn’t something you should worry about or question as you get older. It’s also a great way to widen your social circle, attending various events where you can relax while mixing with like-minded people. You can spend your free time partaking in activities such as:

  • Wine tastings
  • Restaurant or bar openings
  • Meeting up with friends from further afield once a month over your favourite tipples
  • Attending regular events at the bar in your retirement care community.
  • As a way to relax of an evening with your partner

When you’re enjoying social events and meeting new people – as well as old friends – a glass or two of alcohol is definitely something that fits in well. But, it’s always a good idea to remember not to have too much to drink, too often. Sure, some may have that one drink too many now and again, but keeping the balance right and enjoying alcohol in moderation is the best way to stay healthy and fully in control.
